2012 Leapfrog Top Hospital

St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) is one of only 65 hospitals nationally—and five in Michigan--to receive a “Top Hospital” designation for providing the highest quality in the United States. The Leapfrog Group gave a top patient safety and quality of care award to SJMO at its annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.  The Leapfrog Group is a national coalition of public and private purchasers of employee health coverage aimed at working toward improvements in health care safety, quality and affordability.  Twelve hundred hospitals nationally were surveyed for this distinction.

The “Top Hospital” designation, the most competitive national hospital quality award in the country, recognizes hospitals that deliver the highest quality care by preventing medical errors, reducing mortality for high-risk procedures like heart by pass surgery and reducing hospital readmissions for patients being treated for conditions like pneumonia and heart attack.  SJMO achieved this honor because of the hospital’s commitment to delivering the highest quality care, resulting in the prevention of medical errors and a reduction in mortality, hospital readmissions and hospital-acquired infections.

“St. Joseph Mercy Oakland prides itself in making patient safety its top priority while delivering the highest quality care to our patients, said Jack Weiner, SJMO President and CEO.  “It is an honor to be chosen for this prestigious designation.

Participation in the Leapfrog Group’s national survey is voluntary.  The survey focused on four critical areas of patient safety:

  • The use of computer physician order entry (CPOE) to reduce medication errors

  • Standards for doing high-risk procedures such as heart surgery

  • Protocols and policies to reduce medical errors

  • Adequate nurse and physician staffing
