About CME

Continuing Medical Education (CME) off to the side on home)
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland’s CME is an organization accredited by the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS), accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) ™ to physicians and other health care providers.  SJMO CME is the official accredited provider for SJMO.

Our CME Mission
St. Joseph Mercy Oakland will provide physicians and other health care professionals with high quality educational programs that will enable them to enhance their medical knowledge, skills, patient care practices, professionalism, and overall physician competency.

Our Purpose
As a leading institution in the development and implementation of CME activities, the SJMO CME program supports the continuing professional development of physicians through the promotion and integration of the following six core competencies to the medical staff and local medical community through Continuing Medical Education.

  • Patient Care
  • Medical Knowledge
  • Interpersonal and Communications Skills
  • Practice-Based Learning and Improvements
  • Professionalism
  • Systems-Based Practice

These competencies are deemed necessary for patient safety and quality patient care.  SJMO has established a high quality, evidence-based CME program that is independent, fair, balanced, objective and relevant.

Our Targeted Audience
The CME audience includes individuals on the medical staff, allied health personnel and community physicians.

CME Activities at St. Joe
SJMO has a wide variety of robust CME programs.  These program activities were designed to improve physician gaps in practice, competence and performance.  At SJMO our educational goals are accomplished by means of regularly scheduled series such as live lecture Grand Rounds, Tumor Boards, Journal Clubs and Mortality and Morbidity Conferences.  Special activities include Enduring Material, Oncology Symposiums, Clinic Day, Resident Research Forum, and Simulation Lab Workshops along with many others.  We have also established opportunities for effective on-line courses along with an audience response system that is used for the purpose of measuring audience knowledge base pre/post program.

Goals Identify Evidence Based Medical Practices

  • Incorporate and maintain evidence based practices in health care
  • Expand medical knowledge and skills
  • Ensure that each of the events follow the guidelines set by the Michigan State Medical Society
  • Address the needs for education as identified by the physicians, medical staff leadership, and committees based on performance improvement and quality management programs
  • Maintain high quality educational conferences with the latest advances in medicine and technology
  • Ensure that all conferences will be free of commercial bias

Expected Results of the Program
There are two purposes to the assessment of CME programs.  The first is the satisfaction of the participants in the lecture itself, as measured by the CME evaluations. This evaluation tool is constructed to focus on the key parameters of satisfaction for the lecture.  The second key area is to measure the ability of the CME event to achieve its goals in improving while ensuring quality care and patient safety.  We will identify and access barriers to change as well as whether our CME programs produced changes in physicians’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes, which increase clinical competence and/or improve performance with the goal of improving patient care, safety and health outcomes.

We will identify and expect the following:
1) When measured, our learners will demonstrate competence, and/or performance, and the effective use of targeted skills.
2) That thee learner will indicate intent to change practice behavior, identify barriers to change and apply newly acquired strategies in their practice,
3) We expect to report greater confidence in managing clinical problems.
