About St. Mary Mercy Hospital
St. Mary Mercy Hospital, located at 36475 Five Mile Road at Levan Road in west-central Livonia, is a 304-bed acute-care hospital. St. Mary Hospital was founded in 1959 by the Felician Sisters. In 2000, the hospital became a member of Trinity Health, the largest health care system in Michigan, at which time the name changed to St. Mary Mercy Hospital.
St. Mary Mercy Hospital has received numerous awards, including the 2003 Governor’s Award, 2004 National Quality Award (Trinity Health), and the 2005 HealthGrades Distinguished Award for Clinical Excellence and Distinguished Award for Patient Safety.
Over 465 Doctors, 425 Nurses, 968 Support Staff and 200 Volunteers provide health care and support to area residents. Over 90% of the St. Mary Mercy Medical Staff is board-certified. The medical staff represents over 45 specialties and subspecialties, brings advanced training and techniques to patients, and provides the latest in health care procedures. The highly trained and dedicated professional nursing team offers a high level of quality through advanced credentials as well as compassionate care to patients and families.
Advanced Medical Care
Major medical services include anesthesiology, behavioral medicine, cardiology, diagnostics, emergency medicine, family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology/radiation oncology, pathology, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, and surgery.
The Emergency Center provides advanced emergency services 24 hours a day, with full hospital backup. Separate emergency entrances for walk-in and ambulance patients provide both convenience and privacy. A Chest Pain Clinic provides specialized evaluation and diagnosis of emergency patients with chest pain. Primary Emergency Angioplasty, known as PPCI, provides life-saving techniques for heart attack patients. St. Mary Mercy Hospital is one of only a few non-open heart hospitals in the area to provide PPCI. St. Mary Mercy is also one of 17 hospitals in Wayne County that is a member of Health Emergency Medical Services (HEMS). A state-of-the-art cardiac monitoring network system provides advanced care in the Emergency Center as well as in the Special Care Unit (cardiac care and intensive care) and Medical Cardiology Unit (MCU). St. Mary Mercy’s cardiac monitoring system provides the most advanced heart monitoring capabilities available.
St. Mary Mercy offers a full-range of diagnostic testing for patients conveniently located in the Diagnostic Services Center. St. Mary Mercy was the first hospital in the nation to obtain the Somaton Plus-S CT scanner, and now offers two CT scanners. St. Mary also has the distinction of providing fixed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), mobile Photon Emission Tomography (P.E.T.) services, Electrophysiology, Mammography, Cardiac testing and Nuclear Medicine procedures. Patients also benefit from Laboratory services, Respiratory Care, Sleep Disorder Center and St. Mary Mercy Wound Care Center.
Complete cancer care is available, including diagnosis, assessment, treatment and follow-up. Advanced radiation oncology services offer the latest in linear accelerator and other high-tech radiation treatment equipment. Plans to build a Comprehensive Cancer Center are underway.
The Miracle of Life Birthing Center provides private Labor-Delivery-Recovery-Postpartum (LDRP) suites in a family-centered atmosphere. The center provides new families the comfort of private, home-like rooms, mother-baby nursing care, 24-hour rooming in and convenient visiting for family members.
The Marian Women's Center offers women a private setting for special diagnostic testing, such as mammography, ultrasound, EKG, bone densitometry, stereotactic breast biopsy, and massage therapy, as well as educational and support programs tailored to their needs.
Advanced surgical procedures are provided in a spacious Surgical Services Center, including a pre-op area, eight surgical suites and Phase I and II Recovery areas. A large, comfortable waiting area with Physician Consult Room is available for families. Surgical procedures include colorectal, gall bladder, hand, hysterectomy, laser, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, oral, orthopedic, otolaryngology, plastic, retinal, thoracic, and vascular surgery. More than 70 percent of surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, including cataract removal, tonsillectomies and cystoscopies.
Behavioral Medicine provides comprehensive mental health services, including a 31-bed acute care, inpatient mental health unit and a 10-bed chemical dependency unit.
Inpatient Rehabilitation provides intensive physical therapy, restorative nursing, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, social services, and psychological and recreational therapies for patients who have experienced such medical conditions as stroke, neurological diseases, multiple trauma, burns, fractures, congenital deformity, or spinal cord injuries.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers individualized treatment for patients in physiatry, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech pathology. Inpatient Rehabilitation is scheduled to open in July 2005.
Community and Support Programs
Community Outreach offers classes, support groups and ongoing health care instruction to hospital staff and the community. The Speakers' Bureau provides healthcare professionals from St. Mary Mercy Hospital to speak at local civic and community meetings.
Spiritual support is offered to patients of all faiths by the Spiritual Care staff, available 24 hours a day.
Transportation for patients coming to St. Mary Mercy Hospital for Diagnostic, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Radiation Oncology services is available. The Courtesy Van is free of charge and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
St. Mary Mercy Hospital maintains an active community relationship, and sponsors numerous community events. These include the Hearts of Livonia, mall walking programs at Westland Mall and Laurel Park Place, senior citizen events, YMCA programs and a partnership with the Livonia Community Recreation Center. St. Mary Mercy is a member of the Chambers of Commerce in Livonia, Novi, Northville, Canton, Plymouth, Garden City, Redford, Westland and Farmington/Farmington Hills.
St. Mary Hospital Volunteer Services provides vital support to the hospital. Over 200 volunteers assist with needed services throughout the hospital, including a Pet Therapy Program.
Fund Development oversees fundraisers held during the year to help provide medical equipment and support health services for the community. These include dinners, dances, golf benefits and book sales.
The Senior Connection program provides special services and health events for seniors, including a lecture series, discounts and health fairs.
The St. Mary Mercy Child Care Center, located on site, provides quality developmental programs for infants, toddlers, preschool, and pre-kindergarten children.
