How long will I be a patient on the Inpatient Psychiatric Program?
Length of stay depends on many things, including the treatment plan that is designed especially for you. Your doctor and treatment team will discuss this with you in the first few days.

How much cash can/should I have?
You do not need cash on the unit.

Can I wear my jewelry?
Because valuable items can be lost or stolen, we encourage patients to not wear or keep jewelry in their possession.

Can I make telephone calls?
There are five phones on the unit where patients may make and receive phone calls throughout the day. Telephones are not to be used during group times.

Do I need to sign a release of information for my family and friends to call me during my stay?
Not if the call is made directly to phones designated for patients. However, if family members choose to call the unit directly a signed release of information is required for staff to talk with the family member.

Can I have a TV?
There are 3 large screen TV’s in the lounges for use by all patients and is free of charge.

What are some activities I will be required/asked to participate in?
Daily activities include goal setting, exercise, group therapy, spiritual support, pet therapy, social skills, and daily contact with your nursing staff.

Can I smoke while on the unit?
SJMHS is a smoke free campus, smoking is not permitted.

Can I have food brought in or order take-out?
Visitors may bring food onto the unit, however the food must consumed during that visit. Beverages must be sealed and caffeine free. Patients many not order take-out food to be delivered by an outside vendor.

What about computers and cell phones?
Laptop computers, cell phones, MP3 players, tablets and e-readers are not permitted on the inpatient unit.

What are the visiting hours?
Staff on the Inpatient Psychiatric Program recognizes the importance family and friends can play in the recovery and/or stabilization of an acute psychiatric emergency. Therefore, there are various times through the week that visitors may stop by the Inpatient Psychiatric Program.

  • Mondays: 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Tuesdays - Fridays: 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sunday and Holidays: 12:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • All minors under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult, minors must be supervised at all times by an adult who is not the patient.
