Our Residents

Residents of the Obstetrical and Gynecology Program are as follows:

Katie Zdrada, MD – Class of 2015

Katie was born and raised in Toledo, OH. Her interest in medicine started during her high school anatomy class. She took pre-medicine classes in college at The Ohio State University, where she majored in Psychology. She continued on to attend medical school at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, where she enjoyed volunteering and singing in the a cappella group Vocal Remedy.

During her clinical rotations, she fell in love with Obstetrics and Gynecology. After a rotation in OB/Gyn at St. Joe's during her 4th year, she knew this was the place for her! She enjoys reading, cooking, walking in the park, and trying new restaurants. In the summer, she enjoys spending time at her family's cottage, where she loves to waterski and go on boat rides. She and her husband Brian just welcomed their first baby, Matthew, and they couldn't be happier."

Joses Jain, MD – Class of 2015

Joses is from Vancouver, British Columbia, a modern city surrounded by picturesque mountain ranges on one side, and west coast beaches on the other. He grew up enjoying the natural splendor around him, spending his time hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, and scuba diving. Joses earned a BSc in Biology at the University of British Columbia before attending St. George’s University School of Medicine. It was here that he developed his passion for OB/GYN, and also where he met his fiancé Natasha, a native Michiganian (or perhaps Michigander?).

Though far from where he grew up, coming to Michigan is its own “coming home” of sorts; Joses’ grandfather, the first of his family to immigrate to the United States, settled in Ann Arbor, and Joses has spent many summers here ever since he was a toddler. He is excited to start a new chapter in life, back where it all began! In his spare time, he enjoys experimenting in the kitchen, ambushing friends on x-box 360, doing crosswords with his wife, and playing outside. Despite the annual disappointment, he remains a devoted Canucks fan.

Kristin Streifel, MD – Class of 2015

Kristin Streifel was born and raised in a small town in the grassy rolling hills of North Dakota. When she was in junior high, her father suffered a heart attack and Kristin had her first experience with medical professionals as they saver her father's life. It was then she first thought about being a physician, but was still undecided. She attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where she discovered her true passion was to pursue a career in medicine. She attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND where she received her M.D. Throughout her years in medical school she participated in community service actives and was a mentor for teenage youth. She also served in leadership positions with the American Medical Women’s Association and Women's Health Conference.

Kristin is excited to be at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital where she can serve women as their physician. Kristin and her husband live in Ann Arbor where they enjoy cooking, traveling and all the Great Lakes area has to offer.

Risa Curtis, DO – Class of 2015

Risa was born and raised in Austin, Texas, where she grew up in the country on a small farm and spent summers working at her parent's dog and cat boarding kennel. In the fifth grade, she and her family set sail, living on a sailboat for almost two years before returning to the same home. She attended the University of Texas at San Antonio, not far from her Austin home, for her undergraduate degree in Biology. From there she moved to Forth Worth, where Risa attended the University of North Texas Health Science Center to obtain a Masters Degree in Medical Science. She went on to graduate from the UNTHSC Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Risa has been interested in pregnancy and birth since she can remember. She has a humble background and an open mind, appreciates the great and the small, and hopes to have a spot in this world to accomplish both. She's enjoying raising her daughter, Alani, and looks forward to returning to Texas to practice near her family.

Dr. Danielle Gagnon

Danielle Gagnon, MD - Class of 2016

Danielle was born and raised in a small town in central Maine. She earned her chemical engineering degree from the University of Maine and worked for two years in engineering. As much as she tried to forget about her dreams to be doctor, she couldn't. She eventually attended the University of Vermont Collage of Medicine. She went from wanting to be a orthopedic surgeon to a pathologist before she realized how much she loved OB/GYN.

In Danielle's spare time she and her new husband love to do anything outside. Her summers are filled with waterskiing, hiking, rock climbing, biking, and running. She spends her winters skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and making snow angels.

Dr. Amy Kohlmeier

Amy Kohlmeier, MD - Class of 2016

Amy was born and raised in Sarnia, ON, eh! She attended University of Notre Dame for undergrad where she ran cross country and track and field and studied Science Preprofessional. After undergrad, she went to Saba University School of Medicine on the tiny, 5 square mile island of Saba. Amy always knew OB/Gyn was what she wanted to do but her 3rd year core and 4th year elective just confirmed this.

In her free time, Amy enjoys being active and still tries to run every day, swim, snowboard and workout. She LOVES to shop and sometimes feels as though she missed her calling as a personal shopper =). Amy is so happy she matched somewhere close to home because she plans to go back as much as possible to spend time with family and friends.

Dr. Mariko Shelton

Mariko Shelton, MD - Class of 2016

Mari grew up in Columbus, Indiana, a small town with great modern architecture. At Carleton College in Minnesota, she majored in Psychology and also studied Anthropology and Women’s Studies. Mari decided to become a doctor while doing medical care management at a homeless shelter. She completed pre-med courses at Northwestern University and Medical School at Loyola in Chicago. Highlights from the last few years include studying medical Spanish with a midwife in Guatemala and getting married this Spring. Mari’s favorite part of Ob/Gyn is carig for women through transitions in life. Her second favorite part is doing surgery. She lives with her husband and two cats in Ann Arbor.

Taiwo Durowade, MD- Class of 2017
Tonya Hyde, MD - Class of 2017
Ayesha Khan, MD - Class of 2017

Ayesha was raised in the metro Detroit area, where she grew up with her three sisters. She was born in India and lived around the world but claims Michigan as home. Family and travel are her loves in life. She studied at the University of Rochester for both undergrad and medical school in Rochester, New York.

Ayesha loved taking care of women especially during pregnancy and birth. She enjoys the conversations and the action Ob/Gyn brings. She is excited to be living in Ann Arbor as well as being closer to her family.

Catriona Macardle, MD- Class of 2017

Cat hails from Durham, a small northern English city that once had Harry Potter film in its 900 year old Cathedral! She attended Durham University where the college system, like Oxford or Cambridge, is still in place. Some undergraduates live in a medieval castle but her college "Trevelyan College" was entirely composed of hexagons. Apparently the architect was concerned that females had an internal fear of right angles! Managing to overcome this fear of right angles, Cat graduated with BA (Hons) in Anthropology and by that time had also worked and travelled worldwide. Her dream of becoming an OBGYN was set well before her admission into Newcastle medical school, but was cemented by her experiences in a Ghanaian labor and delivery unit.

She followed her husband to Michigan a few years ago and has never been happier. She enjoys spending days off with her two little boys and soaking in everything that enchanting Ann Arbor has to offer. She especially likes hearing the University of Michigan marching band rehearse a couple of blocks from her house, having Ann Arbor's famous Washtenaw Dairy ice cream parlor down the road, and planning her winter knitting projects. St Joe's has been the perfect family for this outsider and she is looking forward to seeing what the rest of residency brings.

Jade Burch, MD – Class of 2018

Jade was born in Detroit, MI. She knew from a very young age she wanted to become a physician, inspired primarily by her childhood pediatrician. She had a mindset that she was going to follow in his footsteps and become a pediatrician until she enrolled in the University of Michigan for undergrad. It was there, while pursuing her major in biology that she began to experiment with a few courses in Women’s Studies. She loved them so much she earned a minor in Gender and Health and knew she was an OB/Gyn in the making. Her inclination was further solidified with her third and fourth year clerkships in OB/Gyn while she was a medical student at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, IL.

She is a self-proclaimed “home-body” that loves reading (especially teen adventure fantasy!), movies and a nice glass of wine. But never fear, she also enjoys a night out with family and friends for dancing or enjoying dinner at one of Ann Arbor’s multitude of awesome restaurants!

Caitlin Parker, MD – Class of 2018

Caitlin was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California. She attended University of California Los Angeles for undergrad where she played soccer and majored in biochemistry. Believe it or not, very ready to leave California she attended Michigan State University College of Human Medicine where she discovered both her love for OBGYN and the state of Michigan not to mention met her fellow Spartan engineer husband.

She looks forward to caring for women through times of celebration and transition in their lives. Caitlin fell in love with St. Joes OBGYN and is so thrilled to spend at least the next 4 years surrounded by such incredible fellow residents and supportive faculty.

JohnnaNynas.jpg   Johnna Nynas, MD – Class of 2018

Johnna grew up in Evansville, Minnesota, a rural farming community known for its rolling hillsides, beautiful lakes, and Scandinavian heritage. She received her bachelor's degree in Women's Studies and Public Health at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. She then accepted a staff position as a Retail Manager at the University of Minnesota where she worked extensively with student development and teaching. Shortly after college she married her college sweetheart, Dan, and together they adopted two Shetland sheepdogs whom they affectionally call their "fur kids." Johnna attended the University of Minnesota Medical School's Duluth campus. While she always had an interest in women's health, she decided to become an OB/Gyn after realizing her love for both surgery and primary care.

In her free time Johnna is an accomplished cook; having taught several cooking classes and is currently working on her first cookbook. She also loves music and dancing, and is a licensed Zumba instructor. She hopes to incorporate her knowledge of cooking, love of Zumba, and passion for preventative care into her future medical practice.

AlexArgyelan.jpg   Alex Argyelan, MD – Class of 2018

Alex grew up in Bourbonnais, IL, a small town 50 miles south of Chicago. He hadn't always known he wanted to be a physician and actually did not realize it until his senior year of college after shadowing a local physician. He did his undergraduate studies in Physics at Knox College in Galesburg, IL. He then went to medical school at Ross University in Dominica, while completing all of his clinical rotations in the Detroit metro area. He chose OB/GYN because of the diversity in the physicians' role. When not reading or working he enjoys cooking, exercising and spending time with friends and family.
