Advance Directives

Medical Treatment Choices
(Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare or Living Will)

According to Michigan and Federal Law, hospitals have been directed to offer information regarding your medical treatment choices. St. Mary Mercy Hospital makes this information available to you through the Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare and Patient Advocate forms. If you have an Advance Directive, please provide it to Registration, Admitting or the Nursing staff. Brochures on Advance Directives are available in the hospital lobbies or call 734-655-2300 for more information.

Since many patients do not have an advance directive, or wish to change their directive, all inpatients will be asked about their code status at the time of their admission. Patients have four options for the code status:

  • Full Code: no limit on life-sustaining treatment
  • DNR (Do Not Resuscitate): patient will receive no resuscitation or CPR if cardiac or pulmonary arrest occur. Patient will be treated as medically indicated
  • Comfort Care: Patient will receive no CPR, no extraordinary measures and no new treatment modalities
  • No Decision: neither patient nor family has made any choice from the above, at which time the patient remains at Full Code status
