An Engagement Proposal Caps Off St. Mary Mercy's 5th Annual "Embrace Life" 5K run/walk
Start Date
As Angela Huizar, 32, of South Lyon, crossed the finish line of her first 5K, she wasn’t expecting boyfriend James Roy, 29, to be on bended knee. Roy, a Washtenaw County sheriff, proposed to Huizar after 10 years of dating, greeting her with flowers and a diamond ring. “I just thought the flowers were for finishing the 5K,” she said. “I didn’t expect him to propose. Even when he pulled out the ring box, I was still trying to catch my breath and wasn’t processing what was happening!”

Besides the engagement, St. Mary Mercy Hospital’s 5th Annual ‘Embrace Life’ 5K run/walk for Cancer held on September 11, turned out to be the most successful yet. 638 runners and walkers registered for this event, which raised nearly $24,000. Over the years, proceeds from the race have provided hundreds of people with necessities that go along with the treatment of cancer including transportation to and from treatments, wigs and oncology massage.

Awards were given to the top three male and female overall winners of the run, as well as almost 90 age-group winners, from ages 13 and under through 80 and up. Top three overall male winners were 1)Vincent Jesudowich, of Northville, with a time of 17:17; 2)Craig Dolecki, of Redford, with a time of 18:16; and 3)Adan Gomez, of Livonia, with a time of 18:44. Top three overall female winners were 1) Nicole Ozimek, of Taylor, with a time of 20:48; 2) Kristin Kachnowski, of Wixom, with a time of 20:49; and 3) Renee Champagne, of Milford, with a time of 20:57. St. Mary Mercy also recognized the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with a moment of silence, a flag raising by Boy Scout troop No. 782 and national anthem sung before the start of the race.
