St. Mary Mercy Hospital Recognized for Excellence in Emergency Medicine and Clinical Quality Rated Among Top 50 Hospitals in the Nation
Start Date

Article
St. Mary Mercy Hospital was recently ranked among the best 50 hospitals nationwide and among the best providers of emergency care.

HealthGrades, an independent healthcare rating company based in Denver, awarded St. Mary Mercy Hospital the America's 50 Best Hospitals Award™ 2012 and the Emergency Medicine Excellence Award™. The awards were announced in March and February, respectively.

This is the second consecutive year in which St. Mary Mercy received the America's 50 Best Hospitals Award™ 2012. Hospitals earning this distinction have demonstrated superior and sustained clinical quality, ranking them in the top five percent of all hospitals in the nation.

Hospitals making the Top 50 list are those that have received the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ the most consecutive years. This year, a minimum of seven consecutive years was required to make the 50 Best Hospitals list. In January, St. Mary Mercy received the 2012 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™, making this eight years in a row.

“As an objective third party, HealthGrades’ findings show how the care received once admitted to the hospital can make a difference between life and death. With that, we are not only achieving our goal in saving lives, but are among an elite healthcare group,” said David Spivey, president and CEO, St. Mary Mercy Hospital.

HealthGrades analyzed more than 150 million Medicare hospitalization records from fiscal years 1998 through 2010 for 26 procedures and diagnoses, including myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, stroke, total knee replacement, and pneumonia. Hospitals included in the analysis met minimum thresholds for patient volumes, quality ratings, and the range of services provided.

The hospitals that received the Emergency Medicine Excellence Award™ are in the top five percent nationwide, a list of about 263 hospitals. Over 4,000 hospitals were included in the study.

To receive the Emergency Medicine Excellence Award™, HealthGrades analyzed more than seven million Medicare patient records from 2008 to 2010 and based on 12 diagnoses. The report identified hospitals with the lowest risk-adjusted mortality rate by only including patients who received a full continuum of care: they were first admitted to the emergency room and then transferred to the hospital for further medical treatment. Patients who received emergency care at these top hospitals had a 40 percent lower death rate.

Another key finding in the study: Senior patients made up 61 percent of hospital admissions that started in the emergency department. At St. Mary Mercy Hospital, one-third of its emergency care patients are seniors, aged 65 or older. St. Mary Mercy Hospital’s 24-hour Emergency Center treats more than 40,000 patients annually, including patients seen in the Senior ER.

“I am pleased with this emergency medicine designation of excellence, which represents the dedication of our staff and the commitment of our organization to our community," added Spivey. “With our Senior ER services and the addition of our new South Pavilion, we are prepared to keep our community healthy and vibrant in the years to come.”

St. Mary Mercy’s South Pavilion, slated to open in the fall of 2012, will include a new state-of-the-art first-floor Emergency Center and Senior ER twice the current size, and two floors of all-private patient rooms, with renovation to existing semiprivate patient rooms to all-private as well.
