Obstetrics & Gynecology

The St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Obstetrics and Gynecology residency training program is sponsored by Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.  This is a fully accredited program, approved by the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Osteopathic Association.

The four year program puts heavy emphasis on education.  We also offer a high volume of primary care, preventive medicine and gynecologic subspecialty patients.  Two of the subspecialties are offered on our campus, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Gyn Oncology. Rotations in Urogynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology are provided by local high volume practices.  We also have a monthly OMM workshop led by Dr. Goldman.  As of 2008 we have grown from a 12 resident to a 16 resident program.  We accept both OGME 1 (Graduating students) and OGME 2 (Those having completed a rotating internship).

Our program is very structured and offers residents an opportunity to gain exceptional academic and clinical knowledge.  However, residents are expected to cultivate and maintain skills to become independent lifelong learners.  With a level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and full time Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians on staff, our hospital is a tertiary care center for high risk obstetrics and gynecology throughout the area.  In July 2012 the Maternal Fetal Medicine department accepted its first Fellow into training.  The presence of an MFM Fellow has helped to strengthen our academic environment.

In October of 2009, our new two-story 50,000 square-foot Surgical Pavilion opened.  It enables us to combine advanced technology with compassionate care to create a unique healing environment.  With a staff of over 35 gynecologists performing surgery, some of whom perform robotic surgery, your experience as a resident at SJMO will provide an opportunity to become an exceptional surgeon; prepared for today and ready for the changes of tomorrow.  The hospital recently opened its new South Patient Tower with state-of-the art patient technology.

The residency program is part of Statewide Campus System (SCS), which is the postgraduate consortium for training obstetrics/gynecology residents sponsored by Michigan state University College of Osteopathic Medicine. This affiliation provides regular monthly didactic sessions as well as courses in ultrasound, colposcopy, anatomy with cadaveric dissections and practice management.  The hospital is also affiliated with Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education which provides opportunities for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year residents to participate in mock oral exams.

Applications must be filed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).  To be considered for a residency position you must be a graduate from an Osteopathic medical school.  Preference for interviews is given to candidates who have passed COMLEX Part I and II on the first attempt.

The interview process is held once yearly.  It is a one day event that encompasses individual interviews and an open forum with residents.  Also included are a tour of the facilities and introduction to faculty and staff.  Complimentary breakfast and lunch are served.  The interview day is typically the second Saturday in November.
