Program in Internal Medicine Approved positions: 50; Funded positions: 50
Welcome From the Program Director Welcome to the internal medicine information page at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland. The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our goal is to train board certified, competent and successful physicians. Our program provides the teaching, patient population and mentoring to achieve these goals. Our faculty are dedicated with years of teaching experience and provide a nurturing environment. They attend resident conferences, assist residents in research, work side by side with the residents in the clinic and wards, and develop mentoring relationships with the residents.
Location Our hospital is located in Pontiac, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit and serves a diverse population. Housing is very affordable and there is little traffic congestion. Many residents walk to work from nearby apartments. Public schools are exemplary and nationally rated. Detroit hosts many cultural, sports and entertainment venues and is only 20 minutes away.
Curriculum Our curriculum focuses on patient based care. Evidence based medicine, science and technology are blended with compassion at the bedside. Residents develop lifelong skills that will sustain their practice.

Simulation Laboratory St. Joseph Mercy Oakland is proud to announce its Simulation Lab is in operation. Internal Medicine curriculum schedules residents quarterly. In addition to hands on training, faculty provides didactics and feedback to support training.
Graduating Residents Our American Board of Internal Medicine three-year running pass rate is 87% and above the national average. Most of our graduating residents work as hospitalists. About a quarter to half of residents go on to fellowship training. A few residents go into primary care.
Conferences Residents have regularly scheduled conferences. Morning Report is an interactive session that focuses on diagnosis and medical management decisions. Noon Conference are formal lectures held Monday through Friday. Other conferences include Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Morbidity and Mortality Report, and Ethics Grand Rounds.
