St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Continues Investment In Pontiac; Enhances Patient And Visitor Experience
Expanded Pharmacy and Gift Shop,
New Patient Tower and Surgical Lounge Among Projects
Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) is undergoing many campus regeneration projects to better meet the needs of patients, their families and the community.
Among the projects already completed are a new retail Grand Concourse that features an expanded pharmacy and gift shop, a coffee shop, convenience store and a comfortable new seating area. New pre- and post-op areas opened in spring, and nearing completion are a new surgical lounge and a surgical and endoscopy reception area.
The newly opened pharmacy, available to the public, features:
More space than in its previous location
Extended prescription service counter with multiple locations for drop-off and pick-up of prescriptions
Advanced technology to help fill and dispense medications
Expanded space for over-the-counter medications, and
A dedicated prescription counseling area.
The boutique-style, expanded gift shop, located in front of the pharmacy, allows customers to pick up prescriptions and typical drug store items without having to make multiple stops. The Joe’s Java coffee shop provides personalized service, a wide selection of beverages, salads, sandwiches and baked goods. The competitively priced convenience store has a selection of everyday grocery items. The airy new seating area, adorned with plants and natural colors, provides a relaxing atmosphere for patients, family members, visitors and associates.
The surgical reception area is designed to welcome patients and their families as a one-stop registration area, so that one nurse will follow the patient from their arrival and guide them to the procedure area, avoiding multiple handoffs to clinical staff. The family-friendly surgical lounge will have refreshments, computer stations, a reflection room and private seating arrangements. A patient tracking board will keep families informed of their loved one’s progress.
In September, SJMO opened its new Senior Emergency Department to meet the unique care needs of older adults. The new Senior Emergency Department is staffed by a team of physicians, nurses, pharmacists and social workers who have completed additional geriatric medical training to help them better understand the special needs of senior adults.
Plans also are under way to construct a new $125.7 million patient tower, complete with 136 private rooms able to accommodate changing technology while providing the highest level of safety for patients. The eight-story tower also will have healing gardens and places for reflection. The project is expected to take about three years to complete.
Jack Weiner, SJMO President and CEO, said these enhancements make a difference when patients and their families choose a hospital. “It’s our belief that having the highest quality, the highest customer satisfaction, lower cost than most of our competitors and an outstanding physical environment make us North Oakland County’s hospital of choice and a good value.”
Pharmacy hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays and holidays. The new gift shop is open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. The convenience store and Joe’s Java coffee shop are open 7 a.m.-midnight seven days a week.
