St. Joe's Oakland Earns 3-Year Accreditation
ST. JOSEPH MERCY OAKLAND EARNS THREE-YEAR ACCREDITATION FROM AMERICAN COLLEGE OF RADIOLOGY
Accreditation Represents Highest Level of Image Quality and Patient Safety
Pontiac, Mich. - St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). SJMO is one of 10 facilities in the state of Michigan to earn this distinction.
MRI of the breast offers valuable information about many breast conditions that may not be obtained by other imaging modalities, such as mammography or ultrasound.
The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.
“We are honored to have received the accreditation of our breast MRI program from the ACR,” said SJMO Director of Breast Services Amy Kirby, MD, a breast surgeon. “Patients can be reassured that they will receive the highest quality MRI, read by a radiologist with expertise in breast imaging. Breast MRI is just one part of our comprehensive breast program.”
SJMO President and CEO Jack Weiner said recognition of the hospital’s breast center by a national body like the ACR “is a testament to our commitment to quality and patient safety and distinguishes us, once again, as a center of excellence.”
SJMO holds National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) accreditation for its breast cancer program and the hospital’s Breast Imaging Center was one of the first Breast Imaging Center of Excellence programs in the state recognized by the ACR. Additionally, the St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Cancer Center was recently recognized as a Certified Participant of the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program (NQMBC ™), a quality initiative of the National Consortium of Breast Centers, Inc. This distinguished honor represents a commitment by the SJMO breast center to provide the highest level of quality breast health care to patients in the local community.
The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
