St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Interventional Neurologist Presents At International Stroke Conference

Presentation to Spotlight Hospital’s Michigan Stroke Network

Pontiac, Michigan—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) vascular and interventional neurologist Sandra Narayanan, MD, is presenting a poster at the International Stroke Conference in New Orleans, La., this month.  Co-authors are members of the SJMO neuroscience team:  Ramesh Madhavan, MD; Connie Parliament, RN, MSN; Pratik Bhattacharya, MD; Andrew Xavier, MD; and Seemant Chaturvedi, MD.

The poster, “Utilization of a Statewide Telestroke Network and Sustainability Over Time—The Michigan Stroke Network Experience,” assesses telestroke utilization across the Michigan Stroke Network (MSN) from 2006 to 2011.  During that period, MSN call volumes increased by 79 percent, demonstrating the feasibility and success of timely neurological consultation and facilitated stroke decision making.  More than one-third of the consultations utilized the InTouch Robot (InTouch Health, Santa Barbara, Calif.).  Intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (IV-tPA) rates through MSN were 13.1 percent, which is 2.5-3.9 times the national average.  Patients were more likely to be transferred to the hub, SJMO, if endovascular intervention was planned.

From 2008 to 2011, there was an increase in the number of patients discharged to home or rehabilitation and a decrease in the number of mortalities and hospice referrals.  Average neurological deficit as quantified by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), was 7.5 points lower at discharge than at admission.

Launched by SJMO and Trinity Health in October 2006, the MSN provides advanced stroke care to 31 partner hospitals throughout Michigan.  By using telemedicine and real-time audiovisual technology, emergency room physicians at participating hospitals have access 24/7 to SJMO stroke specialists.  SJMO was named Michigan’s first certified primary stroke center in 2004.  A partnership with the Wayne State University Physician Group enables the MSN to have access to ongoing clinical trials and stroke research across the state of Michigan.

A member of SJMO’s stroke team, Dr. Narayanan is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology at Wayne State University.  She is a graduate of the six-year Honors Program in Medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed a neurology residency at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, a vascular neurology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and a three-year fellowship in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

Dr. Narayanan specializes in minimally invasive neuroendovascular procedures to treat acute stroke, coil intracranial aneurysms, embolize adult and pediatric arteriovenous malformations, fistulas, tumors and stent intra-/extracranial vessels. She serves on the editorial board of Journal for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases and is an active member of the Society for NeuroInterventional Surgery (SNIS), Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN), the American Stroke Association and the American Academy of Neurology.  She also is a member of the Michigan State, Oakland County and Wayne County medical societies.
