St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Still Has Places Available For Free, Public Oral, Head And Neck Cancer Screening

Noninvasive and Pain-Free Screening Offered by St. Joe's Cancer Center in Cooperation with Dental Residency Program

Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) is still taking registration for its free, community-wide Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Screening Saturday, March 15.   The free screening will be offered by the SJMO Cancer Center in cooperation with the Dental Residency program.

The screening is quick and easy. It is noninvasive and painless.  Participants may sign up for a 10-minute appointment between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. that day. Appointments may be made by calling 1-800-372-6094.  Although appointments are preferred, drop-ins are also welcome to participate.  The screening will take place in the Cancer Resource and Support Center on the first floor of the Alice Gustafson Center on campus, 44405 Woodward Ave., Pontiac.

Oral, head and neck cancer is the sixth most common form of cancer in the United States, and 40,000 cases are diagnosed annually.  Most oral cancers arise on the lips, tongue or on the floor of the mouth, but they may also occur inside the cheeks, on the gums or on the roof of the mouth.  These also include cancers in the throat, voice box, skin, sinuses, saliva glands and thyroid gland.

There generally are no early signs of these cancers.  Signs of oral, head and neck cancers in later stages may include a sore in the mouth that does not heal, constant mouth pain, lumps or patches in the mouth, pain around the teeth, voice changes, sore throat, swallowing pain, earache, voice changes and bleeding.

Surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are the most common treatment options, with treatment involving many different professionals including surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, dentists, nutritionists and speech therapists.
