Partners at Heart Celebrates 20th Anniversary and Ranks
Highest in Quality Outcomes

Port Huron, MI – Partners at Heart, the joint cardiac program of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Port Huron Hospital, is celebrating its 20th anniversary of providing comprehensive cardiac services to the Blue Water area and has recently been ranked among the best in quality outcomes when compared to other hospitals by the Society for Surgeons.

The two hospitals established Partners at Heart in 1993 based on community need. Although both hospitals had approval from the state to create their own programs, they determined that it would be more beneficial to the community if they combined their resources and extensive expertise into one solid service. Its purpose is and was twofold, to eliminate the need to travel out of the area for cardiac care and to offer one of the best heart surgery programs anywhere. With more than 3,700 open heart surgeries performed since the program's inception, that mission remains steadfast today.

Recent data released by the Society for Thoracic Surgeons provides evidence of the program's continued success. For coronary bypass surgery, Partners at Heart has a surgery mortality rate of 0 percent, while like hospitals have a rate of 2.4 percent and the national rate is 2 percent. The mortality rate during aortic valve replacement is 0 percent for Partners at Heart; 2.9 percent for like hospitals, and 2.6 percent nationally. The rate of patients who return to the OR for post-operative bleeding is 0 percent for Partners at Heart, 1.9 percent for like hospitals and 1.7 percent nationally.

Because of significant medical advancements over the past two decades, many patients are now treated with interventional procedures such balloon angioplasty, coronary stent insertion and electrophysiology procedures rather than surgery. Partners at Heart has expanded through the years to offer all of these interventional procedures by adding state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs and a dedicated electrophysiology lab.

Partners at Heart is a comprehensive cardiac service including diagnosis, treatment, surgery, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and community education. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in this country, with one out of every three deaths the result of heart disease and stroke. To combat these statistics, Partners at Heart helps hundreds of individuals annually by providing free educational programs, materials, presentations, a support group and other resources for the community.
