Patient Resources

X-ray is a type of high-energy radiation. In low doses, X-rays are used to diagnose diseases by making pictures of the inside of the body. X-ray technology was invented completely by accident, but it has allowed us to see inside the human body since 1895.

SJMHS uses new state-of-the-art X-ray technology known as digital radiography, which allows technologists to use the lowest dose of radiation while still obtaining high quality images. Digital radiography uses a minimum of 30% less radiation than conventional film. In addition, digital radiography allows the technologist to review your images within seconds, reducing wait time in the department. After your study is complete, your images are stored digitally in our virtual online imaging library or PACS system, along with a copy of your report.

SJMHS performs adult and pediatric general diagnostic imaging at all of our locations.   In addition to standard imaging, SJMHS performs more complex imaging procedures with the use of fluoroscopy.

SJMHS X-ray technologists (radiographers) are registered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The technologists work closely with our board-certified radiologists to provide comprehensive, high quality diagnostic imaging and interpretation.
We offer extended evening and weekend hours for walk-in exams at certain locations. Hours of availability vary by location (hyperlink to grid).

We pride ourselves on our patients receiving compassionate care; our team does everything possible to decrease anxiety by explaining procedures thoroughly, address your concerns, answer questions and make you as comfortable as possible throughout your exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I go?

Park at the Main Entrance, and proceed through doors into lobby.  Go to the back left corner of the lobby to check-in and/or register.  After 6 p.m., please proceed through the Emergency Department doors.  Let the check-in staff know that you are either here for a walk-in X-Ray, or here for a scheduled Radiology exam.  They will contact the technologist.

Note:  By entering through the Emergency Department, this does not mean that you will be checking into Emergency.

Do I need an order from my physician for an X-ray?
A signed physician order from your physician is required for all procedures. If you arrive for your walk-in or scheduled exam without an order, we will make every attempt to contact your physician to obtain another copy.  Procedures may be delayed or re-scheduled if we are unable to contact your physician.

Do I have to change clothes for my procedure and why?
In most cases, you will be asked to remove clothing and wear a hospital gown. We utilize digital imaging technology allowing us to obtain very detailed images. Due to the highly sensitive nature of digital imaging, we may ask you to remove clothing to eliminate artifacts caused from items such as waistbands, pant legs, buttons, appliques, etc.  You will be asked to remove any metal objects (i.e. jewelry) that might interfere with image quality.

What locations offer scoliosis studies?

If you arrive at a location that cannot perform a scoliosis study, you will be directed to the nearest location that performs these procedures.

Can I still have X-rays if I am pregnant?
Females will be asked by the Radiologic Technologists if there is any chance of pregnancy.  If you are pregnant or suspect that you may be pregnant, we advise that you consult with the ordering physician before your procedure.   Depending on the area of the body to be imaged, you may be referred back to your ordering physician before proceeding with imaging.

When will I receive my report?
A radiologist will interpret the images and a report will sent to the physician who ordered your procedure. Please follow up with your physician’s office on when and how you will receive the results of your PET/CT procedure.

You may also gain access to your results utilizing the SJMHS Patient Portal (must be previously registered to utilize).   Reports are typically available on the Patient Portal 5 days post exam.

How do I obtain a copy of my report or images?

To obtain a copy of your report or images, please contact the Imaging Results Center (IRC) at 734-712-RADS (7237) or fill out an online request for imaging results.  Note:  The IRC requires 24 business hour notice to fulfill your request.  You will be able to pick up your material at the location you specified and will be required to present a photo ID and sign a release at the time of pickup.
