We feel very strongly about patient education prior to surgery. Each patient will attend a pre-surgical class detailing the process they will encounter during their stay in the Center for Joint Replacement at St. Mary Mercy Hospital.
Your Preparation for Surgery
Preparing for a total joint replacement begins weeks before the actual surgery date. Once your surgeon determines that you are a candidate through the Center for Joint Replacement, a member of our Care Coordination Team will contact you. You will be given information about the possible need for blood transfusions and the option to donate your own blood prior to surgery. Your orthopedic surgeon may ask you to see your primary care physician for medical clearance. A Pre-Anesthesia Testing (PAT) visit and an educational class will be scheduled one week in advance of your surgery. The Care Coordination Team will work with you to make arrangements and ensure that you've met the requirements prior to surgery and that all of your questions have been answered.
