St. Mary Mercy's 7th Annual "Embrace Life" 5K run/walk
raises nearly $45,000 for its Cancer Program
St. Mary Mercy Hospital's 7th Annual 'Embrace Life' 5K run/walk for Cancer held on September 8, turned out to be the most successful yet. A record number of 865 runners and walkers registered for this event, which raised nearly $45,000 for St. Mary Mercy Hospital's Cancer Services. Proceeds from the race provide hundreds of people with necessities that go along with the treatment of cancer, such as transportation to and from treatments, wigs, oncology products, and oncology massage, which are available in the hospital's Helen Palmer Image Recovery Center, a salon that specializes in services for cancer patients.
Many of the participants run or walk for someone who is a cancer survivor or in his or her memory and they don’t just stop there; they also encourage other friends and family members to participate as well. Daniel Lobb is an example of this type of participant. In 2007, his father was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. As part of his father’s rehabilitation the family participated in the Embrace Life 5K with him. The family has continued to participate in the race even after the passing of Lobb's father in 2009.
"We try to get as many people together as possible," said Lobb. "It just a great way to honor his memory and you can count on us being here again next year."
Awards were given to the top three male and female overall winners of the run, as well as almost 90 age-group winners, from ages 13 and under through 80 and up. Top three overall male winners were 1) Keith Erichsen of Farmington Hills, with a time of 17:11; 2) Vincent Jesudowich, of Northville, with a time of 17:50; and 3) Steve Menovick, of Grand Ledge, with a time of 17:51.
