The Back School
Let us help you understand your back problem and how to take care of it. A licensed physical therapist will discuss common back injuries as well as posture and body mechanics. This session is open to anyone interested in learning how to take care of their back. First Wednesday of each month, noon to 1 p.m. (no charge.) Call (734) 655-2955.

Blood Pressure Screenings Offered through Senior Health Connection, the following locations provide an opportunity to have your blood pressure taken free of charge. You will be advised if follow-up is needed and appointments are not necessary. For more information, call (734) 655-8940.

Basic Life Support - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (BLS-CPR)
Several American Heart Association courses are offered. Call 734.655.8940 for dates and times.

BLS-Heartsaver: first day of class teaches adult CPR, second day infant and child. One-person rescue technique; Heimlich maneuver; information to assist in a breathing or cardiac emergency and heart health information for the layperson. Participants can choose to attend one or both days and will receive a written exam and card. (fee)

CPR Instructor Renewal: a one-day retraining course (fee).

BLS-Friends and Family: includes infant and child CPR and choking safety information, as well as the rescue techniques for children up to age 8 and infants in a breathing or cardiac emergency; includes injury prevention for the layperson. (fee)

CPR New Instructor: a three-day training course, participants must attend all three days (fee).

Children's Speech Program (C.L.A.S.S)
A program for children with a diagnosis of speech language impairment and a current Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This program is designed to supplement services provided in the school system. Children's Language and Speech Services (C.L.A.S.S.) is offered four times a year based on the school calendar year. Call 734.655.2955.

Diabetes Education Classes (fee)
Learn to "take charge" of your diabetes. A series of classes totaling nine hours provides information for self-care and control of diabetes, including lifestyle changes, diet, foot care, blood testing, medication, complications, exercise, coping and resources. Day and evening sessions are available for persons with diabetes 18 years of age and older. Registered Dietitians and Registered Nurses who are Certified Diabetes Educators teach all the classes. Also available: diabetes and nutrition consultation on an individual basis. The American Diabetes Association has recognized the diabetes self-management education program at St. Mary Mercy Hospital. Healthcare Partnership
St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia offers a program for community leaders that provides a unique, in-depth experience of healthcare today, called Healthcare Partnership. This program enables participants to spend a day with physicians in various settings and service areas, including, but not limited to, surgery, oncology, radiology, orthopedics, emergency medicine, and physician practices.

Intensive Outpatient Substance Abuse Program
This new program provides a continuum of care to the alcohol or chemically-dependent patient. The program is designed for those who do not require hospitalization but still have a need for extensive outpatient counseling. The group format addresses relapse prevention and early recovery issues. Most insurances accepted. For more information, call (734) 655-2936.

St. Mary Mercy Hospital and Laurel Park Place announce the joint sponsorship of the "Laurel Park Place Walking Club," a group of area walkers who exercise regularly in the local shopping center at Six Mile and Newburgh roads in Livonia. St. Mary Mercy Hospital provides blood pressure checks on the fourth Monday of each month, periodic health lectures on timely issues, and various promotional items. Those interested in signing up for the Walking Club can do so at the Laurel Park Concierge Desk.

St. Mary Mercy Hospital now offers physical medicine and rehabilitation, wellness programs , health information and select health screening programs at the recreation center as part of a unique new partnership between the Livonia Community Recreation Center and St. Mary Mercy Hospital.

Newborn Hearing Screening Program
Retired medical professionals are needed for this new program in the Miracle of Life Birthing Center. The hospital is seeking volunteers for a hearing screening program for newborns. The Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program will provide hearing screening for all babies born at St. Mary Mercy Hospital for the early detection of possible hearing impairment. Physician Referral
Need a physician? Call us for a referral for either a primary care physician or specialist. We will provide you with information about a physician close to your home, and, if desired, connect you directly with the physician's office to make an appointment. Call 1(888) 464-WELL (9355).

A walking club held at Westland Center, Wayne and Warren Roads, and co-sponsored by St. Mary Mercy Hospital. Walkers receive free blood pressure screening and health talks courtesy of St. Mary Mercy Hospital staff. Register to become a walker by filling out a Registration Card at our Customer Service booth in East Court, or call the Westland Center at 734.425.5001 to join. We are pleased to partner with the Westland Center to bring you this walking program to help people who are interested in staying healthy through exercise. To further enhance our commitment to the program, we are able to provide many health-related speakers for the monthly meetings. We welcome input from members regarding the topics and encourage you to pass on any ideas at the meetings or leave a suggestion in the Walkers Box located at the Customer Service booth in the Mall.
