About the Program
The Michigan Bariatric Institute (MBI) offers a multi-disciplinary team approach to weight loss surgery. Our team includes our medical director, registered dieticians, registered nurses, behavioral specialists, exercise physiologists, anesthesiologists, specially trained OR staff, insurance specialists and client service representatives. This team is committed to assisting our patients through every aspect of your surgical process. From educational seminars to pre-surgical classes to support groups, we partner with each patient to ensure a smooth transition through each phase of the process as well as enjoying expected weight loss outcomes. The program has three main phases:

  • pre-surgical
  • hospital stay
  • post-operative

Pre-surgical
In this phase, we assist you in completing the application packet and scheduling your consultation with our surgeon. Following the consultation, we will help you organize and schedule your pre-admission testing. Just prior to your surgery, you will complete your pre-surgical education classes, where you learn what you will need for your hospital stay, your nutrition needs following surgery, and details of what to expect when you return home from the hospital.

Hospital stay
This two to three day phase includes the laparoscopic procedure, the recovery period and the first two days of your new healthy life! During this time you will be up and walking through the hospital corridors and receiving further education about your post-operative lifestyle.

Post-operative
This phase covers your follow-up appointments with your surgeon and dietician, your member ship in our ongoing support group and possibly becoming a “BariPartner.” A BariPartner is someone who has experienced the surgery and is willing to mentor someone else on his/her weight loss journey. As you lose weight rapidly, we want to ensure comprehensive medical follow up and close connection to the Michigan Bariatric Institute . We are always available for questions, concerns, or just to talk about your weight loss.

It’s easy! If you would like comprehensive information about the surgery, we hold free monthly educational seminars to discuss and explain the benefits and outcomes. We want to help you fully understand the entire procedure and make the best choice for you. At the seminar you will also meet the surgeon and the Michigan Bariatric Institute staff who can answer any questions you may have.

Call the Michigan Bariatric Institute at 734.655.2692 to inquire about upcoming seminar dates and times, or to request an information packet to be mailed to your home. We will be happy to discuss your individual situation, your insurance questions or any other concerns.

If you have already decided that laparoscopic gastric bypass is the procedure you desire, then you will start the process by completing a short application, insurance information, health and diet surveys and a personal letter of interest . We will gladly send this packet to you in the mail .

Once the application is completed, a consultation can be scheduled with Dr. Zeni . At this meeting, he will discuss the procedure with you, complete a medical history , make recommendations for any pre-operative testing that will be required and set your tentative surgery date!

At this same time, you will meet with our program director who will explain the process of the program to you. She will also discuss your insurance carrier’s criteria for covering the cost of the surgery. She is a Bari-Partner herself and will be happy to share her experience about the weight loss surgery with you.
