Laboratory
The state of a patient’s condition varies constantly, and the physician must be able to monitor it closely. Often, the collection of blood or other body fluids on a regular basis provides the physician with essential diagnostic information.
At St. Mary Mercy Hospital, the laboratory is staffed by medical technologists performing blood and body fluid tests in a fast, efficient manner. High-tech laboratory equipment, such as the Dimension Analyzer located in the Chemistry section, provides the advanced technology necessary for efficient test processing.
The laboratory, including Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Hematology, Pathology, Immunology, Urinalysis and Phlebotomy, is a vital, 24-hour operation, which also offers a Patient Service Center and an Outreach Program serving the lab needs of physicians in their own medical offices. PET (Positron Emission Tomography)
St. Mary Mercy Hospital, Livonia, now offers the latest Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Imaging technology available which can pinpoint the specific location of a disease. PET is a camera that produces powerful images of the human body through a non-invasive procedure that provides specific information about metabolism and cell function, especially for cancer patients. PET can locate diseases in their earliest stages, and is more advanced than Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The initial service began June 28, 2003, and continues to focus on cancer patients, with plans to expand the scope of service in the future.
PET Imaging has many benefits. One image shows all body organ systems, provides pre-surgical assessment and earlier diagnosis of disease. It also reduces the need for invasive procedures, avoids needless pain to the patient, monitors the effects of therapy, and replaces multiple tests. This latest technology also identifies distant tumors, differentiates between scar tissue and tumor recurrence and shows how the body responds to treatment. Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear Medicine studies use weak radioactive drugs to diagnose and treat disease in many parts of the body, including the heart, thyroid, lungs and bones.
Nuclear Medicine uses the latest most sophisticated computerized imaging equipment. St. Mary Mercy Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the nation to install a Siemens Multispect 2 System. This state-of-the-art digital, dual-headed imaging system obtains superior images in less than half the time of conventional units. The Nuclear Medicine team at St. Mary Mercy is highly qualified in both formal theory and practical operation of this advanced equipment.
