Be assured you will be seen in a prompt, efficient manner with the same high quality care that you are accustomed to at St. Mary Mercy Hospital. Thank you for using St. Mary Mercy Hospital for your emergency needs.)
Chest Pain Evaluation Unit
The Chest Pain Evaluation unit in the Emergency Center is an observation area for patients with chest pain who are considered to be at low risk for a heart attack. Patients are evaluated in the unit for about 10-18 hours, but can remain for up to 23 hours without being admitted to the hospital. The unit provides cardiac monitoring, treatment and diagnostic testing in a semi-private room with the conveniences of a regular hospital room, such as phone, TV, meal service and visitor privileges.
The Chest Pain Unit is designed to safely and expeditiously evaluate chest pain patients with low probability of heart attack without having to admit them to the hospital. Patients receive blood tests, a stress test, repeated EKGs, have their heart continuously monitored, and are seen by a cardiologist before being discharged.
This Unit is partially funded by the Hearts of Livonia, a charitable organization in memory of Livonia resident Ben Celani.
Triage and Registration
When you arrive at the Emergency Center, you will be greeted by a registration clerk and a triage nurse. The triage nurse will begin your assessment and the registration clerk will obtain basic information, such as your name, telephone number and date of birth, utilizing our state-of-the-art Electronic Medical Record (EMR) digital technology for patient charting, physician order entry, and record-keeping.
Triage prioritizes patients according to the severity of the injury or illness. The triage nurse obtains important information about your medical condition. Patients with life-threatening medical emergencies are seen and treated first. We appreciate your understanding that patients are seen according to the seriousness of their medical condition, not by their time of arrival in the Emergency Center.
After the triage process is completed, the patient will be taken to an examination room. If an exam room is not immediately available, the patient may be seated in the waiting room until one becomes available.
Bedside Registration
While you are waiting for test results, a registration clerk will come to your exam room to complete the registration process. Registration is necessary to establish a record of your hospital visit. The clerk will request information about you, your family, physician, employment and health insurance. You will also be asked to sign a consent form giving permission to receive medical care. A parent or legal guardian must sign a consent form for patients under age 18.
While we understand it is important to be treated quickly at St. Mary Mercy Hospital, our emphasis is on your safety and well-being. Our staff cares for you in a timely, efficient manner and ensures your stay with us is as pleasant an experience as possible.
