You may be considering total joint replacement if other treatment options have not relieved your pain or disability. Joint pain is usually caused by damage to the cartilage from disease, arthritis or an accident. Healthy cartilage typically allows frictionless and pain-free movement. When the cartilage is damaged, joints can become stiff and painful, allowing for less mobility. St. Mary Mercy Hospital offers a full range of Orthopedic Services, including a joint replacement program through our Center for Joint Replacement. We treat patients of all ages, with a variety of orthopedic conditions, from common to complex. We provide comprehensive clinical expertise and work closely with our patients throughout the treatment process. Our orthopedic specialists can help improve your quality of life and put you on the “Road to Recovery.”

About the Program

The Center for Joint Replacement at St. Mary Mercy Hospital provides a seamless coordination of services for our patients throughout your joint replacement journey. We focus on early mobility for a successful recovery. While still maintaining individual privacy and confidentiality, we have structured this program first in a group setting to provide information, encouragement and support for patients and their families. Upon your decision to proceed with joint replacement, our patient Care Coordination Team immediately begins to prepare you for your joint replacement journey and recovery, from the registration and admission process to discharge and beyond. You will learn about selecting a surgeon, pre-surgical classes, choosing a “coach”, what to expect post-surgery and discharge from the hospital. This innovative rehabilitation program provides patients with the opportunity to work in a team-like atmosphere with other patients and physicians, and has been proven to provide a faster recovery process. We want you to experience a successful, quick, and complete recovery to get you back to the activities you enjoy.

Your Preparation for Surgery

Preparing for a total joint replacement begins weeks before the actual surgery date. Once your surgeon determines that you are a candidate through the Center for Joint Replacement, a member of our Care Coordination Team will contact you. You will be given information about the possible need for blood transfusions and the option to donate your own blood prior to surgery. Your orthopedic surgeon may ask you to see your primary care physician for medical clearance. A Pre-Anesthesia Testing (PAT) visit and an educational class will be scheduled one week in advance of your surgery. The Care Coordination Team will work with you to make arrangements and ensure that you’ve met the requirements prior to surgery and that all of your questions have been answered.
