Patient Resources

Interventional Radiology is a minimally invasive treatment option for vascular and non-vascular disease, using small catheters and catheter-based instruments guided by radiological imaging techniques such as X-rays, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, MRI and CT. The procedures performed in the interventional area range from minimally invasive procedures for venous access issues to more complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed under conscious sedation or anesthesia.

The Imaging Center at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor has three interventional radiology suites staffed with highly qualified, board certified Interventional Radiologists who use advanced imaging guidance for targeted precision in performing a wide variety of minimally invasive interventional procedures. These advanced imaging procedures are replacing many open surgical procedures because they provide for easier recovery, smaller incisions, less procedural risk, less pain and shorter recovery times.

St. Joseph Mercy Livingston performs a limited amount of IR Procedures including:

  • Picc Line Placement
  • Limited Guided Biopsies
  • Drain Placements
  • Thoracentesis

Note:  Please call 734-712-1313 to schedule your IR procedure and fax order to 734-712-1380 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I prepare?
You should report to your physician all medications that you are taking, including aspirin and herbal supplements. Please inform your physician prior to your procedure, if you have any allergies, especially to local anesthetic medications, general anesthesia or to contrast materials (also known as "dye" or "X-ray dye") as a pre-study prep may be ordered by your physician.

Your physician may advise you to stop taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), blood thinners and other medications for a specified period of time before your procedure. For specific medication hold times contact your physician.

Also inform your physician about recent illnesses or other medical conditions.
Women should always inform their physician and X-ray technologist if there is any possibility that they are pregnant. Many imaging procedures are not performed during pregnancy so as not to expose the fetus to radiation.

You may be instructed to not eat or drink anything for several hours before your procedure. You may need to stay overnight at the hospital following your procedure.

How is the procedure performed?
Image-guided, minimally invasive procedures such as angioplasty and vascular stenting are performed by a specially trained Interventional Radiologist in an Interventional Radiology Suite.

The procedure is often done on an outpatient basis. However, some procedures may require a hospital admission. Please consult with your physician. For many of the procedures, you will receive a phone call prior to the day of your procedure from a Radiology Nurse. The Nurse will provide instructions, explain the procedure and answer your questions.  You may contact the Radiology Nurse between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. at 734 712-9261; after hours, please call the Imaging Results Center at 712-734-RADS to have an IR Staff Member paged.

Who interprets the results and how do I get them?
The Interventional Radiologist can advise you as to whether the procedure was a technical success. A radiologist will interpret the images and a report will sent to the physician who ordered your procedure. Please follow up with your physician’s office on when and how you will receive the results of your Interventional procedure.

When will I receive my results?
A radiologist will interpret the images and a report will be sent to the physician who ordered your procedure. Please follow up with your physician’s office on when and how you will receive the results of your MRI/MRA procedure.
