Patient Financial Services – Billing, Insurance and Financial Assistance
St Joseph Mercy Hospital Oakland wants to help you understand the billing process and resources available to you.  Patient Financial Services and Financial Counselors are here to help you understand your hospital bill and to explain options if you are unable to pay for the services you need.

The Basics
Always bring your identification and insurance card when coming to the hospital for services. St Joseph Mercy Oakland is dedicated to protecting the integrity of your medical record and your financial security. We ask for proof of identification at every patient encounter.

Hospital charges are summarized into categories of charges on your bill such as laboratory, radiology, or supplies. Physicians and other professional providers bill their fees separately from the hospital. You may receive additional bills from other professionals who assisted with your treatment, such as radiologists, anesthesiologists, ER physicians and pathologists..

If You Have Insurance Coverage
Most insurance contracts are between an employer group and insurance company, although some plans cover an individual subscriber or a family.
St Joseph Mercy Oakland will bill your insurance company directly.  You, however, are ultimately responsible for all charges and we may request your assistance if your claim is denied by your insurer.

When is payment due?
Most insurance plans include a patient responsibility portion.  In accordance with your insurance plan, we expect the portion that is the patient’s responsibility to be paid at the time of service unless other payment arrangements have been made.
These payments include deductibles, co-pays, co-insurances, fees for non-emergent, non-covered services and cosmetic surgery and past due balances on outstanding accounts.

We accept the following forms of payment:
Cash, Check, Debit Card and Credit Card: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express

We also have an interest-free payment plan available for up to three months.  If you require extended terms, we will assist you in setting up a longer-term loan with very favorable interest rates.

What is “under-insured?”

While many patients have some health care coverage, very often there is limited coverage between the plan and what is needed to meet the health care needs of the patient.  Often, this requires the patient to pay a large amount for services.
If you cannot afford to pay this amount, you may qualify for options listed below.

If You DO NOT Have Insurance Coverage
St Joseph Mercy Oakland is committed to providing accessible, affordable health care services to its community.  In keeping with this goal, we have developed a variety of financial options to address the needs of patients without insurance coverage.

Prompt-Pay Discount
Patients will receive a 10% discount off balances greater than $200, if paid within 30 days of billing. Please call 800.474.5797

Uninsured Discount
Uninsured patients above 400% of the Federal Poverty Level will receive an automatic 25% discount off charges.

Public Assistance Programs
Our financial counselors will work with you to determine if you may be eligible for public assistance programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid.  Call Financial Counseling at 248.858.6196 or visit the Michigan Department of Human Services.

HealthFirst Financing
HealthFirst Financing provides a longer-term loan program.  Terms may extend for up to 60 months.  No credit check is required and the approval process is quick and easy.  This loan program is available for all hospital balances.  While there is an interest charge for the loan, St Joseph Mercy Oakland shares in the interest cost with you.  An application can be completed at http;//www.healthfirstfinancial.com/patient/apply  and apply with the program code STJ6066.

Financial Assistance – Mercy Support
St Joseph Mercy Oakland does not refuse medically necessary or emergency care.  We provide assistance to low-income individuals and those with special health care expenses who live in our service area.

Which Services qualify
Mercy Support may be used for all medically necessary urgent or emergent hospital services including inpatient, emergency and outpatient services for residents within our service area.

Which Services Do Not Apply
Mercy Support does not include the following:

  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Services that are not medically necessary
  • Services to patients who qualify for county, state or federal assistance, other assistance programs or other health care coverage
  • Services that result from a patient going out of their insurance network
  • Balances due to insurance deductibles, co-pays or co-insurances

Based on your individual circumstances, you may qualify for full or partial assistance.  Our Financial Counselors are here to help by assessing your qualifications for the Mercy Support Program.  Evidence of financial need is required to qualify for this program.  Financial Counselors can be reached Monday through Friday 7:30 – 5:00 at 248.585.6196.

Download the Mercy Support application to apply for financial assistance.  The form requires your signature.  The completed form and supporting documents can be turned into the Information Desk in the main lobby of St Joseph Mercy Hospital Oakland.
